Navy Lodge Pensacola: The Default for Navy PCS Families
The Navy Lodge Pensacola sits in Building 3875 aboard NAS Pensacola, on the Radford Boulevard corridor. Front desk: 850-456-8676. Central Navy Lodge reservations: 1-800-628-9466 (1-800-NAVY-INN), or book online at navy-lodge.com/pensacola. Married personnel on PCS orders get reservation priority, which matters in the May–August surge.
Room types run from standard rooms to business-class rooms, family suites, and accessible rooms. Every room has a kitchen setup (fridge and microwave), and the property includes free Wi-Fi, complimentary breakfast, a playground, and a picnic area with a grill — the details that matter when you're living out of suitcases with kids for two weeks. Rates aren't published online; guests report roughly $105 a night, but call for the current number.
The pet policy is the part most families get wrong, because outdated information is still floating around. Under the current NEXCOM Hospitality Group policy (bulletin 23-007, July 2023), 100% of Navy Lodge rooms are pet friendly: dogs, cats, birds, and small caged animals, up to 2 pets per room at 70 pounds each, for $25 per night capped at $250 per stay. You'll need a rabies certificate at check-in, a signed pet agreement, and a crate for any time the pet is alone in the room. Some older local housing pages still describe a four-room, 50-pound policy — the 2023 bulletin supersedes it, but a 30-second phone call when you book settles any doubt.
One practical note: the Lodge is aboard the base, so your arrival day includes getting through security with a vehicle full of household goods. Navy Gateway Inns & Suites: NAS Pensacola and Whiting Field
NGIS NAS Pensacola
Navy Gateway Inns & Suites operates at 600 Moffett Road (Building 600), NAS Pensacola — 24/7 front desk at 850-564-7473, toll-free 1-877-NAVY-BED, booking at ngis.dodlodging.net. Check-in is listed at 1600 (one older guest directory says 1500 — plan on 1600) and check-out at 1100. Payment is card only — no cash, no personal checks — with a credit card and government ID required at check-in. Guaranteed reservations not cancelled by 1600 on arrival day are charged one night.
Eligibility is broader than many people realize: active duty and their families, retirees and their families, Reserve and Guard, and 0–100% disabled veterans and their caregivers, among others. Pets are more limited than at the Navy Lodge — NGIS designates a small number of pet-friendly rooms (dogs and cats only), first-come, first-served, at the same $25/night fee capped at $250 per stay. If you're traveling with pets, the Navy Lodge is the stronger on-base bet at Pensacola. Rates aren't published; you'll see them when you book.
NGIS NAS Whiting Field (Milton)
Whiting Field's NGIS is at 7426 USS Lexington Circle, Building 2942, Milton — front desk 850-623-7605 (24/7), toll-free 1-877-NAVY-BED. Same 1600/1100 check-in and check-out. The suites here earn their keep on a PCS: a separate sitting room plus a kitchen area with cooktop, fridge, microwave, and Keurig, with free Wi-Fi throughout. Pet-friendly rooms follow the same Navy-wide policy. If Whiting is your gaining command, your house hunt runs through Milton and Pace — the Whiting Field base guide maps it out.
Air Force Inns: Eglin AFB and Hurlburt Field
Eglin Inns (Eglin AFB)
Eglin's lodging operation spans six facilities — Bayside, Cove, Riptide, Tidewater, Waterside, and White Sands Inns — with reception and check-in at the Bayside Inn on Boatner Road, Building 11001, 24 hours. Phone: 850-882-8761. Book at af.dodlodging.net, with one big exception: PCS families with children, and anyone needing a pet-friendly room, should call the lodging office directly rather than booking online — that's Eglin's own guidance, and it's the difference between getting a TLF with a kitchen and getting whatever the algorithm assigns.
Unlike the Navy side, Air Force rates are published. Per the signed FY26 rate memo (effective 1 October 2025), Eglin's temporary lodging facilities (TLFs) run $107 a night November–February, $152 in October and August–September, $175 March–May, and $203 June–July. Visiting quarters (VQ) run $99–$185 on the same seasonal split. Notice the shape of that curve: peak PCS season is peak price season, which feeds directly into the TLE math below. Commando Inn (Hurlburt Field)
Hurlburt's Commando Inn is at 301 Tully Street, Building 90509 — 850-884-7115, 24/7, 100% non-smoking. The inventory is 243 visiting officer quarters, 8 general-officer quarters, and 24 TLFs — and those 24 TLF suites, with full kitchens including a dishwasher, are exactly what a PCS family wants and exactly what runs out first in summer. Pet-friendly quarters are limited, first-come, and require immunization paperwork. FY26 rates mirror Eglin's: TLF $107–$203 by season, VQ $99–$185. TLE in 2026: 21 Days and a $290 Daily Cap
Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) is the allowance that reimburses lodging and meals around a CONUS PCS — and it got meaningfully better recently. Effective 27 November 2024, the JTR raised the CONUS cap from 14 to 21 days, and you can split those days however you want between the old and new duty station: 5 at origin and 16 at destination, 0 and 21, whatever your move requires. A CONUS-to-OCONUS move gets up to 7 TLE days on the CONUS side (the overseas end runs on TLA, a separate allowance).
The reimbursement is capped at $290 per family per day — lodging plus meals and incidentals combined, including taxes and fees. The actual daily amount is computed from the locality per diem where you're staying, scaled by a family percentage: a member alone runs at 65%, member plus one dependent at 100%, and each additional dependent adds 35% (age 12 and up) or 25% (under 12). Three rules that bite people in practice:
- Keep itemized lodging receipts. TLE is receipt-based. No itemized receipt, no reimbursement — and it only pays for days you are not drawing PCS travel per diem.
- The per diem that matters is where you sleep. FY26 Pensacola (Escambia County) lodging per diem is $120 most of the year, $149 June–August, with $74 M&IE. The Fort Walton Beach locality — which covers Eglin and Hurlburt — swings from $110 in winter to $260 June–August, with $86 M&IE. Milton (Santa Rosa County) isn't a listed GSA locality, so the standard CONUS rate of $110 lodging / $68 M&IE should apply — confirm on the GSA lookup before you count on it. Practical read: a summer PCS to Eglin or Hurlburt has far more per diem headroom for an off-base extended-stay than a summer PCS to Pensacola does.
- TLE is a PCS allowance, not a transition one. Separation and retirement moves don't qualify. And while DoD can authorize up to 60 total days at designated housing-shortage installations, I could not verify any panhandle base on the current list — ask your gaining housing office rather than assuming.

Pet-Friendly Off-Base Lodging Near Each Base
There is no official "TLE-approved" hotel list — TLE reimburses any commercial lodging with an itemized receipt. The real filter is pet-friendly + extended-stay + at or near the locality per diem. These are the properties PCS families actually use; pet fees and deposits change often, so verify them when you book.
Near NAS Pensacola / Corry Station (Navy Boulevard corridor)

- Comfort Inn Pensacola near NAS Corry Station: up to 2 pets, up to 120 lb each — the option for big dogs.

- Red Roof Inn & Suites Pensacola — NAS Corry: pet-friendly, first pet stays free.
Near NAS Whiting Field (Milton / Pace)
- Red Roof Inn & Suites Pensacola East — Milton: about 15 miles from Whiting; first pet free, up to 3 pets, 80 lb limit.
- Best Western Milton Inn: 2 pets of any size — per-pet nightly fees and a refundable deposit apply, so confirm current amounts.
Near Eglin AFB / Hurlburt Field (Fort Walton Beach / Niceville / Destin)
- TownePlace Suites Fort Walton Beach–Eglin AFB (843 Eglin Pkwy): in-room kitchens, 2 dogs of any size, and it's on Hurlburt housing's own extended-stay list.
- TownePlace Suites Niceville–Eglin AFB Area: the pet-friendly extended-stay option on Eglin's north side, near the East Gate and Niceville schools.

The TLE Strategy: Your Home-Search Clock Starts Before You Arrive
Here's the mistake I watch families make every summer: they treat TLE as the time to start looking for a house. Do that math. A typical Florida purchase runs about 30 days from contract to closing. If you land, check into the Navy Lodge, and begin your search on day one of TLE, even a fast contract leaves you weeks past day 21 — paying full lodging rates out of pocket, in June, at the exact moment Eglin-area TLFs hit $203 a night and the Fort Walton locality per diem stops covering you.
The families who make it look easy run the sequence in reverse:
- 60–90 days out: get pre-approved and define the target — base, gate, school zone, budget. Start with the PCS guide and work the PCS checklist so the lending and paperwork lanes run parallel.
