Hurlburt Field is the home of Air Force Special Operations Command, and the housing decision there carries the AFSOC tempo with it: deployments, odd hours and a family community that leans on itself. The two doors are a Mayroad home on base, where FL056 BAH goes to the partner as rent, or a Mary Esther, Fort Walton Beach, Navarre or Destin address with the allowance in your pay. Here is how I run it for Hurlburt clients, with the office contacts you will actually use.
How on-base housing works at Hurlburt Field
Family housing is privatized and run by Mayroad, which took over the 2013 Corvias partnership in December 2021. The government Military Housing Office is at 123 McMillan Street, 850-884-7505, [email protected], for eligibility, housing options and community-housing guidance, and it wants your particular duty and household circumstances, because the answer depends on them.
Dorm assignment and arrival coordination run through dorm management at 320 Tully Street, Building 90367, 850-884-3188; confirm the actual room with your unit. In a Mayroad home your BAH is paid to the partner as rent, with maintenance included and utilities handled under Mayroad's current utility policy. Hurlburt has its own reporting location and housing office, so do not route a Hurlburt question through Eglin. Office details are from public sources checked September 7, 2026.
Applying at Hurlburt, and the list Mayroad does not publish
Mayroad does not publish wait times and neither does the Military Housing Office; the list moves with bedroom count, pay grade and the summer PCS surge, and 850-884-7505 holds the only current version. Your sponsor or command support staff starts the unit arrival process; apply for housing the day you have orders, and keep a Mary Esther or Fort Walton Beach backup in parallel, because the Commando Inn's family suites run out first in summer. If you cannot be placed at report time, you keep full FL056 BAH off base.
The FL056 BAH trade at Hurlburt in 2026
Hurlburt sits in FL056 (Eglin AFB, FL), planning ZIP 32544, which pays more than the Pensacola area next door. The grades I see most on Hurlburt orders:

On base, an E-6 with dependents hands Mayroad $2,526 a month; an O-3 hands over $3,399. Off base, that figure has to carry the full payment, including Okaloosa or Santa Rosa County taxes, wind insurance and flood coverage where the parcel needs it, and a Navarre address and a Fort Walton Beach address can sit in different counties, school districts and service areas. The 2026 BAH page has every grade; finance confirms your entitlement.
When Mayroad housing at Hurlburt makes sense
- Deployment rhythm. On-base neighbors are in the same SOF world: mission familiarity, childcare coverage during deployments, shared tempo.
- Short or back-to-back assignments. When the next set of orders is likely inside two years, a partner-maintained house avoids the selling costs of an early exit.
- Junior enlisted on FL056 pay. At E-1 to E-4 ($2,340 or $2,007 a month) the capped utilities and zero repair exposure matter more than equity.
- On-base services. Child development centers at 108 McMillan Street and 133 Lielmanis Drive, the commissary and the BX are inside the fence.
When off base wins at Hurlburt Field
- Three-year or longer orders. A VA purchase in Mary Esther or Fort Walton Beach has time to build equity and become a rental at the next PCS.
- Santa Rosa County schools. Navarre's A-rated cluster is an off-base decision, and its guide states a 25-minute commute.
- Space and beach. Four- and five-bedroom inventory in Navarre and Mary Esther, or Destin for the O-3 and above who wants the beach lifestyle.
- The FL056 allowance itself. Navarre draws FL056 BAH while its prices sit in the Pensacola-area range, which is why my Hurlburt clients call it the arbitrage play.
How I run the numbers for Hurlburt clients
- E-1 to E-4 or a short tour: on base, or the shortest Mary Esther lease you can find, about 10 minutes from the main gate per its guide.
- E-5 to E-7 on three-year orders: the VA purchase in Fort Walton Beach (10-15 min via US-98) or Navarre (25 min), tested against $2,433 to $2,841 with dependents and the full payment.
- O-3 and above: schools and lifestyle decide it; Niceville (25-30 min) for the schools, Destin (10-15 min) for the beach, Mary Esther for the gate.
- Dual-career households: Navarre keeps a spouse's Pensacola route workable; Fort Walton Beach keeps both Eglin and Hurlburt in reach.

Hurlburt families split between Okaloosa County (Mary Esther, Fort Walton Beach, Shalimar, Niceville) and Santa Rosa County (Navarre), and both zone by street address; verify the exact parcel on the district locator and read PCS Schools by Base. The clusters that come up on Hurlburt orders:
- Mary Esther / FWB: Mary Esther Elementary (C) / Elliott Point Elementary (B) → Bruner Middle (A) → Choctawhatchee High (B+, band/NJROTC)
- Shalimar: Shalimar Elementary (C) → Meigs Middle (A) → Choctawhatchee High (C). Upgrade middle feeder

Military Family Lifestyle: On-Base vs Off-Base at Hurlburt Field
- Hurlburt's AFSOC community is tight. On-base family housing means your neighbors are also in the SOF world: mission familiarity, childcare coverage during deployments, shared tempo.
- Navarre is THE BAH arbitrage play: Hurlburt pays FL056 BAH (substantially higher than FL064 Pensacola), but Navarre home prices are in FL064 range. Best of both.
- Niceville / Bluewater Bay if schools are top priority and the 25-35 min commute is acceptable. Strongest Okaloosa feeder.
- Destin if you're in at O-3+ and want beach lifestyle. Premium pricing; short commute to Hurlburt but inventory is thinner in the $500-$800K band.

The Navarre guide states a 25-minute commute, and the Mary Esther guide calls it roughly 25 minutes along US-98. Mainland Navarre and Navarre Beach use different routes, and summer tourist traffic on US-98 adds time. Popular with dual-career spouses and families who want Santa Rosa County schools.
Is Hurlburt Field good for sending kids to Niceville schools?
Workable, at the 25-30 minute commute the Niceville guide states. Most Hurlburt families prioritizing Niceville schools live in Bluewater Bay or Niceville proper and accept the drive.
Can 7th Special Forces Group families use Hurlburt on-base?
7th SFG is at Eglin (not Hurlburt) but inter-service housing agreements sometimes allow cross-assignment. Most 7 SFG families live in Crestview, Baker, or Laurel Hill for acreage and lower cost.
